Valorie K. Alfson, 64, of Wyndmere, ND, died Thursday, May 29, 2014, in her mother's home in Moorhead, MN
Valorie Kay Anderson was born February 23, 1950, the daughter of Edgar and Kathlynn (Ystebo) Anderson in Canton, SD. She grew up in various towns in South Dakota and North Dakota, graduating from North Sargent High School in Gwinner, ND.
On December 21, 1968, she was united in marriage to Richard K. Alfson in Binford, ND. She attended North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND, until they moved to Halliday, ND, where she taught at Twin Buttes BIA School. They then moved to Tolna, ND, where she opened the Snack Shack and then to Grafton, ND. The family then settled in Hillsboro, ND, where she worked as an Activities Director in the nursing home, and later served on the Hospital and Nursing Home Association as the Health and Humanities Foundation Grant Director and was owner/editor of the Hillsboro Banner.
She and Rick later returned to Grafton where she worked as a paraprofessional in the Grafton Public Schools. Rick passed away in 1997. Val then moved to Moorhead working as a para at Robert Asp and Edison Elementary Schools. Upon her retirement she moved to Wyndmere.
Val enjoyed spending time with her grandsons, reading, traveling, baking, cleaning, and going to the casinos. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh and great smile.
She is survived by her sons, Cory (Jessica) Alfson, Albert Lea, MN, and Lee Alfson, Fargo; grandsons, Tanner and Logan; special friend, Rob Nelson, Wyndmere; mother, Kathlynn Anderson, Moorhead; sisters, Jacqueline (Ernest) Rusten, Cavalier, ND, and Patricia (Vern) Barker, Moorhead; brother, Ken (Kathi) Anderson, Detroit Lakes, MN; sister-in-law, Bev Pearson, Fargo; brothers-in-law, Jerome (Karen) Alfson, Hillsboro, and Loren (Darlene) Alfson, Binford, ND; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rick; father, Edgar; grandparents; and father and mother-in-law, LeRoy and Bernice Alfson.
Memorials may be directed to the Rick and Val Alfson Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 579, Hillsboro, ND 58045.
Memorial Service: Monday, June 2, 2014, at 1:00 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel in Moorhead.
Interment: Riverside Cemetery, Hillsboro, ND
