Vernon J. Keeping, 95, of Moorhead, MN, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, in Bethany on University in Fargo, ND.
Vernon James Keeping, the son of Charles and Minnie (Wenthin) Keeping, was born in rural Hawley, MN, on November 30, 1922. He grew up and received his education in the Hawley area, where he graduated from high school in 1942.
During WW II, Vernon served his country in the US Navy, where he was stationed on a ship in the Pacific. Following his discharge in 1948, he returned to the FM area.
On March 8, 1953, Vernon was united in marriage to Maxine Larson, in Moorhead, MN, where they made their home. Vernon worked at the Standard Oil terminal for 33 years and retired in 1981.
In 1973, his wife, Maxine died, at the age of 43. Vernon continued to live and work in Moorhead, and raise their three daughters.
Vernon was a creative person, finding solutions for life's problems. He had a keen mind and always enjoyed learning new things. He enjoyed his rose garden and loved "Calvin and Hobbes" cartoons. In 2010 he moved to an apartment in south Moorhead. In December 2017, he became a resident of Bethany on University, Fargo.
Vernon is survived by his three daughters, Kris (Shedd) Waskosky, Sioux Falls, SD, Lynnell (Alden) Sollie, Moorhead, and Beth (Gary) Andersen, Moorhead; a brother Leroy Keeping; nine grandchildren, James Andersen, Sarah (Gage) Durbin, Anne (Jer) Grotjohn, Rachel (Evan) Sheldon, Jonathan, Luke and Zachariah Sollie, and David and Mike (Lindy) Waskosky; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Richard; and two sisters, Evelyn Hansen and Jeanette Zachariason.
Memorials may be directed to Inspiration Point Bible Camp.
Visitation for Vernon will be Thursday, January 11, 2018, from 1 PM until 2 PM in Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church, east campus, Moorhead, followed by his funeral service at 2 PM. He will be buried in Moorhead Memorial Gardens.
