Vernon Roy Gerig Jr. was born July 13, 1936, in rural Benson Cty, ND, to Vernon and Hazel (Quammen) Gerig Sr. and he was raised on a farm near Brinsmade, ND. Vernon attended Gallinger rural school and graduated from Leeds (ND) High School.
On February 5, 1953, Vernon married Esther Shambach in Brinsmade. They moved to Mayville, ND, where Vernon graduated from Mayville State College in 1958 with a B.S. in music education. Vernon then taught music in Leeds, Bottineau, ND, and Moorhead, MN, and he was a piano teacher for many years. He also worked for Nels Vogel Music, then Eckroth Music, retiring in January of 2003.
Vernon's love for music and the piano went beyond teaching. He was the choir director for many churches in the area along with playing the church organ. Vernon also sang and played piano for many quartets.
He was actively involved for over fifty years with the International Music Camp and served as President of its board. Vernon also served on the Peace Garden board and taught Dale Carnegie courses.
Vernon died Monday, October 2, 2006, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND, at the age of seventy. He will be missed by a family who loved him dearly, but know they will see him again in heaven.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Esther, Brinsmade; a son, Ron (Laurie), Holland, MI; three daughters, Ginger (John) Kallander, Moorhead, Lorrie (Joel) Hylden, Park River, ND, and Julie Tollefson, Fargo; thirteen grandchildren; five great-
