Virgil K. Israelson, 90, of Wolverton, MN, died Wednesday, February 26, 2014 in Linden Tree Circle at Eventide on 8th in Moorhead, MN, with his family by his side.
Virgil was born on November 23, 1923, in Christine, ND, to Frank H. and Gustava C. (Foss) Israelson. He grew up in Christine, where he and his siblings were raised on a farm outside of town.
Virgil completed high school in Christine in 1941 and attended North Dakota Agricultural College before being inducted into the Army of World War II. Virgil served his country from January 1945 to November 1946. He was deployed to the Pacific and was in the Philippines when the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. After Japan's surrender, Virgil spent time with the occupation forces in Japan as an MP.
After his discharge from the army, Virgil attended Interstate Business College in Fargo. On July 12, 1947, Virgil was united in marriage to Jean Pederson in Wolverton, MN. She preceded him in death on November 13, 1994.
Virgil started farming in Wolverton Township in 1947, where his sons continue the tradition to this day. Virgil said he retired at the age of 61, but continued to be an active participant in farm activities throughout the rest of his life. He loved to be in the shop watching the boys work and sitting in his pickup watching them combine during harvest. Virgil enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, golfing and spending time at Fish Lake with family and friends.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Jean; brothers, Ernest and Roy; and sisters, Agnes Cline and Rhoda Lakness.
Virgil is survived by two sons and a daughter, Paul (Beverly) Israelson, Wolverton, MN, Gary (Nancy) Israelson, Fargo, ND, and Julie (Steve) Korth, Green Bay, WI. He is further survived by a brother, Quentin Israelson, Moorhead.
He will be sadly missed by his children; his grandchildren, Bryan (Allison) Israelson, Megan (Joe) Woodraska, Tony Korth, Joanna Korth and Jamie Israelson; his great-grandchildren Kaitlyn Israelson and Bryson Israelson; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Visitation: One hour prior to funeral service.
Funeral Service: Sunday, March 2, 2014, at 3:00 PM, in Faith Lutheran Church in Wolverton.
