Virginia "Ginny" L. Swenson, 78, of Moorhead, MN, died Sunday, September 28, 2014, in her home.
Virginia Leah Wood was born April 27, 1936, the daughter of George and Olith (Vaughan) Wood, in Whittemore, MI. She lived on her grandfather's farm near Whittemore until the age of 2, when her father purchased a farm near Tawas City, MI. She was active in 4-H during her grade school years and graduated from Tawas High School. After graduation she worked as a bookkeeper for a furniture store in Tawas City for over a year. She then attended Western Union School in Indiana and then worked for Western Union in Benton Harbor, MI.
Ginny later moved to Washington, DC, where she worked for the Naval Department under the Civil Service Program. This is where she met her husband, Wayne, in 1956 and they were married on March 9, 1957, in Arlington, VA. In August of 1957, they moved to Minnesota after Wayne was discharged from the military. Ginny work from home typing tax forms for a tax consultant during the years she raised her children. She then went to work as an administrative assistant for Norwest Bank, retiring after eighteen years.
She was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, serving as treasurer for three years.
After their children left home, Ginny and Wayne began motorcycling, traveling through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri and Arkansas. They also made a few trips to Hawaii, which was the highlight of all their trips. She enjoyed working puzzles, cross-stitching, knitting, reading, fishing and camping with family for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Wayne; daughter, Dianna (Steve) Liekhus, Ramsey, MN; son, Glen (Janelle) Swenson, Circle Pines, MN; grandchildren, Joshua (Katie) Liekhus, Jessica (Chris) Lucas, Jennifer Liekhus, Eric Swenson and Tyler Swenson; great-granddaughter, Abigail Lucas; sister, Dorothy Kusey, Gladwin, MI; and brother-in-law, Ralph (Delight) Swenson, Moorhead.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Grant.
Memorial may be directed to Hospice of the Red River Valley or Our Savior's Lutheran Church Building Fund.
A visitation for Ginny will be Wednesday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
Her funeral service will be Thursday, October 2, 2014, at 11:00 AM in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moorhead.
Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Moorhead
