Yvonne ("Vonnie") Johnson, Moorhead, MN, died peacefully in her home on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2007, just one week after her 76th birthday. She was surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. She'll always be remembered for her amazing wit and sense of humor, neither of which she lost, even in her final days. Her courage, enthusiasm and optimistic attitude was an inspiration these past two months to her family and friends alike.
Vonnie was born on November 15, 1931, in Sabin, MN, to Verne and Connie Beahl. She moved with her family to Moorhead, where she attended school. She was a 1949 graduate of Moorhead High School and continued to enjoy the friendships of many of her classmates until her death. After high school Vonnie graduated from Moorhead State College. Her career as a teacher took her to positions in Madison and Barnesville, MN, and later in the Moorhead Public Schools.
Vonnie married Leo Johnson at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead, MN, on June 15, 1952. They made their home in Grand Forks, ND, and later in Moorhead, MN where they raised their three children.
She is survived by two daughters and a son: Lori (Brad) Jorgensen of Fargo; Jean (Carlos) Carrasquillo of Barrington, IL; and Keith (Jean) Johnson of Grand Forks, as well as four grandchildren: Alex Jorgensen, Erik Carrasquillo, Mindy Johnson and Travis Johnson. Vonnie is also survived by her dedicated friend and companion, Mel Rasmussen, of Moorhead; sister in-law Vaughn Beall, and many nieces and nephews. She was blessed with a multitude of friends here in the northland and also in her southern winter retreat in Mesa, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leo, and her brother, Jack Beall.
Throughout her life, Vonnie enjoyed many hobbies and activities. She was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead and more recently, Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mesa, AZ. She was adventurous and enjoyed traveling, exploring and learning. Vonnie loved words - reading, crossword puzzles, "The Jumble" and writing in her journals. She also enjoyed her volunteer work at Eventide Senior Living Community. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Vonnie's family expresses their deepest gratitude to Dr. John Leitch, Dr. John Thomas, and all of the angels from Hospice of the Red River Valley for their kindness, caring, and assistance.
