He was raised on a farm near Gary, MN until his family moved to another farm outside of Richwood, MN when he was 13 years old. Wally graduated from high school in Detroit Lakes, MN. On December 5, 1951 he married Colleen Connell and they made their home in Richwood for several years while he worked for Ernest C Anderson Gravel. A work-related arm injury at the age of twenty-two caused him lifelong chronic pain, but he never let it limit what he could do or keep him from enjoying life to the fullest extent. He liked visiting with family and friends and always loved a good story or joke and had a wonderful sense of humor. He joined the guys at deer hunting camp into his 80’s and also went on several fishing trips to Canada that he thoroughly enjoyed. During his retirement years, he spent many hours working on projects at their lake property on Buffalo Lake. Wally had a very creative and inventive mind and was always thinking about new projects and ways of doing them. He was an avid reader and kept up with the news and current events. When time permitted, he and Colleen went on several road trips. Although their favorite times were spent with their children and grandchildren.
