Wallace Rasmussen, 89, rural Lake Park, MN, formerly of Moorhead, MN died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009, in St. Mary's Hospital, Detroit Lakes, MN.
Wallace Eugene Rasmussen, son of Peter and Alpha (Carlson) Rasmussen, was born Dec. 27, 1919 in Fergus Falls, MN. He grew up in Fergus Falls, and in Fargo, ND. During WW II, he served his country in the US Army. He served overseas in North Africa and in Europe.
On Oct. 8, 1945, Wallace married Alice Brodigan, in Moorhead, MN, where they made their home. Wallace was a construction ironworker. He worked on many large construction projects in the FM area, including Dakota Hospital and the Fargo high rise. He had served as president of the Trades and Labor Assembly in Fargo. In addition to construction, Wallace owned and operated hotels in Fargo, an antique store in Moorhead, and a bar in Gardner, ND. The family lived in Dickinson, ND, for a year, where Wallace taught at a job corps training center.
His wife, Alice died in 1981. He retired in 1983. Wallace was an avid reader, a big Twins fan, a gardener, fisherman, and a poker player. In 2003, he moved to Ulen, MN, and later to Sunnyside Nursing Home, near Lake Park. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Robbie and a granddaughter, Amanda "Beaner".
Wallace is survived by his 10 children: Emily Armistead, St. Paul, MN, Patricia (Dale) Hearn, Watertown, SD, Linda (James) Kava, Moorhead, Lyle (Jennie) Rasmussen, Moorhead, Connie (Daryl) Kubitz, Hawley, MN, Thomas (Pat) Rasmussen, St. Paul, MN, Barbara (Dale) Rasmussen, Moorhead, Joanne (David) Bjorem, Hawley, Paul "Nick" (Cheryl) Rasmussen, Moorhead, and William "Bill" (Kirsten) Rasmussen, Moorhead; a sister, Helen Hagen, Washington state; 28 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Sunday, 5 PM to 7 PM, with a prayer service at 7 PM,
