Walter “Dutch” T. Moratis, 90, of Moorhead, MN, passed away, Monday, July 1, 2024, in his home with family by his side under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Walter “Dutch” Thomas Moratis was born August 8, 1933, the son of Nick and Susie (Ricker) Moratis in Moorhead, MN. He was raised in Dilworth, MN, where he attended school and at the age of seventeen began his career with the Northern Pacific Railroad in Dilworth. Dutch was later drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1955, being stationed in Japan until his discharge in 1957.
Upon his return from the Navy, Dutch resumed his career working for the railroad. In 1961, Dutch was united in marriage to Margaret Tietjen in Wilmot, SD. They established their home in Moorhead and were blessed with their son, Mark. Dutch then continued his career with railroad and retired after nearly 30 years.
He was a member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Moorhead for sixty-one years. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting and fishing and also found solace in gardening, a passion he cherished throughout his lifetime.
Dutch is survived by his wife Margaret; sister, Carolyn Holtgard; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark; seven brothers and sisters.
A Visitation for Dutch will begin at 12:00 pm, Friday, July 5, 2024, followed by his Funeral Service at 1:00 PM, in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Moorhead. He will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in Moorhead.
