Willard G. Pechtel, 88, of Fargo, ND, died Tuesday, October 15, 2013, in Bethany on 42nd in Fargo.
Willard Gregory Pechtel was born August 17, 1925, the son of Henry and Frieda (Hillesheim) Pechtel, in New Ulm, MN. He attended school in New Ulm and graduated from Mahnomen (MN) High School in 1943. Willard then proudly served in the U.S Army, in the European Theater, during World War II.
Upon returning to the United States, Willard was united in marriage to Bernice Parr on October 13, 1945, in Anderson, IN. They returned to Minnesota where he attended Globe Institute in Minneapolis, MN. He then began working with Burlington Northern Railroad, residing in Sauk Centre. MN, and later Sabin, MN. Bernice died in 1977.
On October 18, 1980, he married Gloria Meyer, in Hawley, MN. They made their home in Hawley where he continued to work for Burlington Northern until retiring in 1985, after 38 years. After retiring, Willard and Gloria spent winters in Arizona and Texas. They moved to Fargo in 1995.
Willard was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Fargo American Legion Post #2, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and Burlington Northern Retirees Association.
He cherished time with his family, especially attending his grandchildren's activities. Some of his other pastimes included golfing, crossword puzzles, card games (Quiddler), and watching sporting events, especially the Minnesota Vikings and Twins.
Willard is survived by his wife, Gloria; son, Greg (Joyce) Pechtel; stepdaughters, Kathy (Steve) Romer, Danielle (Jeff) Poliak, Deb (Ross) Meyer, and Kim Meyer; fifteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and sister, Beulah Floody.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bernice; son, Patrick; daughter, Sheila; grandson, Bemo, and great-granddaughter, Kylie.
Visitation: Thursday, 5 PM to 7 PM with a Prayer Service at 6:30 PM in Korsmo Funeral Service, Moorhead.
Funeral Service: Friday, October 20, 2013, at 10:30 AM, in St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Moorhead.
Burial: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead, MN
