Willard K. "Lindy" Lindquist, 95, Moorhead, MN, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, in Elim Care and Rehab Center, Fargo, ND, surrounded by his family.

Willard Kenneth Lindquist, known as "Bill" to his Oklee relatives, was born December 20, 1914 to August and Gunhild (Engen) Lindquist, in Calio, ND. The family moved to Oklee, MN, where he graduated from high school. He earned his bachelor's degree from Concordia College, Moorhead, in 1939. His first teaching and coaching job was at Keister, MN.

In 1942, Lindy enlisted in the US Navy. As a commanding officer, he was in charge of communications for several landings in the Pacific. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he earned his master's degree from the University of Minnesota, followed by two years of teaching and coaching in Ellendale, ND. He then moved to Elbow Lake, MN, where he taught for 12 years. In 1961, he accepted a teaching and coaching position with Moorhead Public Schools, which he held until his retirement in 1977. Lindy also served as a member of the State Teachers' Ethics Commission for six years.

After retirement he enjoyed spending more time at the family lake home in Minnesota, which was a special place to him. He will be remembered for the beautiful items he carved, that many still enjoy.

Willard married Vernice Norell at Klara Lutheran Church, rural Heimdal, ND, on August 1, 1948. Their son, Gary, and daughter, Gwen, were born while making their home in Elbow Lake. As a family, they enjoyed camping and traveling thoughout the US and Canada. When their three grandsons arrived, Lindy taught them the basics of baseball and attended their school, sports and church functions. As a member of United Lutheran Church, Elbow Lake, and Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead, he served on church councils, taught Sunday school, and was faithful in home Bible studies. He was an active member of Gideons International.
