William "Bill" Herman Prieb was born August 23, 1905, in Wolverton, MN, to Louis and Louise (Doege) Prieb, who farmed in that area. Bill was raised on the farm and attended rural school for his education.
Bill began farming as a young man and farmed until 1945. Bill traveled extensively and worked at several occupations, including resorts, restaurants, a dude ranch and hospitals. Bill also sold cars and financial investments for a time.
Bill was united in marriage to Tennie Plumberg on February 21, 1957, and they lived in Moorhead, MN, but spent their summers at their lake home. In 1967, Bill bought a 113 acre farm on Lake Sybil, two miles from Vergas, MN. He and his late wife, Tennie, developed sixteen lots and named it Prieb Park. In 1993, they sold their lake home and returned to Moorhead. In 1995, Tennie died after a prolonged illness.
Bill and Tennie were major benefactors for the Christian schools of Fargo and Moorhead. They gave significant gifts to Concordia College in Moorhead, Oak Grove Lutheran High School in Fargo, and Park Christian School in Moorhead. His keen interest in children caused him to enable Park School to purchase fifteen acres of land owned by Burlington Northern Railway. That land has now become Prieb Park and Playground.
His philanthropy extended to missionaries, to Christian causes beyond education as well as generous gifts within his extended family. Within this region, Bill owned and sold over forty pieces of property within his lifetime that expressed his love of the soil as well as farming.
Bill died Monday, June 29, 2009, at one hundred three years of age, at Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo, where he had resided since 2004.
Bill is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Bill will be Thursday, July 2, 2009, from 6 - 7 PM at Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
