Willis Walter Wiger was born July 28, 1918, in Boyne Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Gerhard and Augusta (Jacobson) Wiger. The family left Canada when Willis was very young and they eventually settled in the Hillsboro, ND, area.
Willis attended all twelve grades at Bohnsack Consolidated School in rural Hillsboro, and then continued to farm with his family. He was united in marriage to Ruby Harveland on December 14, 1946, in Fargo, ND.
They moved to Fargo in 1962, where Willis worked for Fargo Public Schools as a building engineer. He retired in 1982 and they continued to make their home in Fargo.
Willis enjoyed hunting, fishing and horseshoes. He was rated as one of the top horseshoe pitchers in the state of North Dakota. He also enjoyed traveling and visiting his children and grandchildren.
Willis died Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at his home under the care of his family and Hospice of the Red River Valley, at ninety-one years of age.
Willis is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Ruby, Fargo; his children, Larry (Lori) Wiger, Fargo, Willis (Arla) Wiger Jr., Anderson, IN, Bryan (Nancy) Wiger, Plainfield, IN, Joyce (Gary) Olsen, Morongo Valley, CA, Pamela (Norm) Adams, Palm Coast, FL, and Denis (LeAnne) Wiger, Danville, IN; thirteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred McSparron, Hillsboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Red River Valley, Hope Lutheran Church (North Campus), American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.
Visitation for Willis will be Friday, January 22, 2010, from 5 - 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.
The memorial service will be Saturday, January 23, 2010, at 1 PM, in Hope Lutheran Church, North Campus, Fargo.
